When renowned film director and musician, David Lynch, and Chrysta Bell, vocalist, approached director Chel White to direct this highly stylized music video, Mr. White tasked me with helping him design the technique to achieve his vision.  The mechanical, pixilation-like motion of the principles was a cornerstone of this vision, but furthermore, he wished to shoot much of it in reverse while also maintaining perfect lip-sync with the vocals.  Trusting in me to design a shooting & post technique that would achieve his ideas, I was given charge of determining shooting frame rates, calculating music playback for sync, and creating a phonetic script for Chrysta Bell to perform from cue cards, and to coach her on how to sing her song backwards.  The results were even astounding to me, for when the footage was played back at 24 fps, and in reverse, we were able to achieve over 90% perfect lip sync on all takes.  Furthermore, after principle photography, I was charged with overseeing several pickup shoots, receiving, transcoding, and sync’ing all footage, as well as acting as primary compositor.   After the project’s completion, and after Mr. White, Mr. Lynch, Chrysta Bell, and I had watched the final cut, Mr. Lynch said, “I like it,” something that  Chrysta Bell later informed us was incredibly rare for him to say.

In commemoration of the 13th anniversary of The Dandy Warhols’ breakout release, 13 Songs from Urban Bohemia, a promotional tour of 13 locations around the Pacific Northwest, all significant to the band’s history or to the city of Portland, served as venues for the band to perform, and record, each of the 13 songs from the record.  I personally captured 75% of all footage used in this promotional edit for the tour, as well as acting as lead editor, designing all graphics, and performing the final color correction for release.

As a pet project for acclaimed commercial director, Nando Costa, this highly stylized interpretation of Modest Mouse singer, Isaac Brock’s Whale Song, depended heavily upon compositing and motion graphics to achieve its look.  I performed rotoscoping and color-key compositing responsibilities, as well as serving as principle Behind The Scenes (BTS) cinematography and still photography, both for BTS and for some elements used in the music video.

Artist: Will West and the Friendly Strangers

Will West has long been a pillar in the Portland music scene, and being tapped to direct a live, multi-camera production for the band was an honor.  He and the band allowed me to have almost complete creative autonomy over the project, only wanting to submit a few editing notes during the later phases of production.  Directing these live-performance music videos has since become something of an era of expertise for me, having direct a total of four videos for four different artist.
